In a delimited text file, the items are separated by a special character (the delimiter). An item’s position is specified by how many items precede it on the line (the first item has position 1).
In a fixed length text file, each item has a fixed position and length. Its position is specified by how many characters precede it on the line (the first character has position 1), and its length is the number of characters it uses.
